  5.     The saga of Forrest Carter's book is a publisher's dream. The
  6. Education of Little Tree, a sensitive memoir of Carter's Native
  7. American childhood, was published in hard-cover in 1976 to
  8. little fanfare. Released in softcover by the University of New
  9. Mexico Press this year, the book now tops the New York Times
  10. paperback best-seller list, with 600,000 copies in print.

  12.     But is the book a hoax? Yes, says Dan T. Carter, a history
  13. professor at Emory University. In an op-ed page piece in the New
  14. York Times last week, Carter charged that the late Forrest
  15. Carter was not a Cherokee at all. Instead, he was Asa Earl
  16. Carter, whom the professor describes as a "Ku Klux Klan
  17. terrorist, right-wing radio announcer, home-grown American
  18. fascist and anti-Semite."

  20.     The allegation that the novelist and the racist were one
  21. and the same was swiftly disputed by the author's executor and
  22. Asa Earl Carter's brother Doug. The latter did acknowledge that
  23. Asa wrote speeches for Alabama's George Wallace, including the
  24. infamous lines "Segregation now. Segregation tomorrow.
  25. Segregation forever!" But old friends point out that Asa and
  26. Forrest Carter looked alike, used the same address and were the
  27. same age. Perhaps the book should be retitled The Mystery of
  28. Little Tree.
